Amnesty International hits H&E Maisie Rose and Lucy Webber
Amnesty is a human rights organisation that is independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. It was founded in 1961 by Peter Benenson, who was outraged when two Portuguese students were jailed just for raising a toast to freedom. He stated that "only when the last prisoner of conscience has been freed, when the last torture chamber has been closed, when the United Nations Declaration of Human Tights is a reality for the world's people, will our work be done."
As part of their campaign, Amnesty investigates and exposes the facts whenever and wherever abuses happen. Amnesty in Herts and Essex is currently run by the two Head of Schools, Alice Dyer and Serena Doran, as well as attended by many Year 12 and Year 13. We investigate not only the human rights across cultures, but also in our school. Previously, we have participated in discussions surrounding child marriage and women's rights. Actions focusing on these topics have been the aid to Alice Dutton in her 'Girls not Brides' social media campaign, and March4Women in London. These have given us an opportunity to further our political knowledge, as well as partake in events concerning current issues we are all interested in.
If you would like to join us, we meet in H1 every Monday form-time. We hope to see you there.
