Everyone has been planning what pink item of clothing they will wear every Wednesday.Although, there is another reason some people may adorn pink ribbons in October. October is breast cancer awareness month where many people are mourning losses, celebrating ringing the bell, or just showing support. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer worldwide, with 2.3 million women being diagnosed and 660,000 dying in 2022. However, breast cancer doesn't only affect women, in 2019 around 25,100 men were diagnosed and globally there were 12,100 deaths. In the UK there are approximately 150 cases of breast cancer diagnosed daily. This disease doesn't always result in death, over 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are predicted to live for another 10 years or more. The pink ribbon is an internationally recognised symbol of breast cancer awareness, this was introduced by Charlotte Haley (a survivor herself) introducing the concept of wearing a peach coloured ribbon to show support for the cause and receive more funding for cancer prevention. The colour pink is considered feminine in modern Western cultures, representing values of kindness, beauty, good and cooperation. The ribbon represents courage to fight cancer, hope for the future and evokes solidarity with women suffering. In the wise words of Karen Smith, ‘On Wednesday’s we wear pink’ so show your support this October and wear it pink! On Friday 4th October there is a bake sale for the Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise funds for those suffering with cancer. This event has been organised by Mrs Hayward and she is asking for cake donations, baked or bought on the New Hall stage, Friday morning (cannot contain nuts). Cakes will be sold for £1 and hot drinks for 50p! (Tea/hot chocolate) This event will raise money to be donated to charity supporting an important cause. You individually could donate and aid this cause.
