Equalities Re-Branding: Kaleidoscope
Ellen Jones
What is Kaleidoscope?
Kaleidoscope, formerly known as the Equalities Group, is the school’s LGBT+ group. First and foremost we are a safe space offering support to pupils, however some members of the group choose to partake in activism work.
Why did the group decide to change name?
We felt as though the name suggested we addressed all types of equality issues, whereas our primary focus is upon addressing issues affecting LGBT+ people.
What do you do at Kaleidoscope?
Quite a few meetings are spent drinking tea and chatting about issues, either related to the LGBT+ community or otherwise, although sometimes meetings are spent preparing for events such as LGBT+ History Month and. There is total flexibility in how much you as an individual are involved in and there is no stipulation to partake in the more public work we do.
What does LGBT+ mean?
LGBT+ is an initialism which stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, and the + is used to encompass as any other identity which is not heterosexual or cisgender.
Can anyone come to Kaleidoscope?
Yes! Anyone, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation is welcome at Kaleidoscope. Any year group is more than welcome to attend. There is no requirement to be ‘out’ and the group respects everyone’s personal boundaries, confidentiality and privacy. If you come to a meeting, no-one will question your identity and you do not have to share anything you are not comfortable with. Although the group is geared towards supporting LGBT+ people, allies of the community are welcome.
When and where do you meet?
We meet every Wednesday lunchtime in C4 (you can bring your lunch!)
