The majority of the news over the Easter holiday was not about the UK’s love for Jesus but rather the activists that took to disrupting London over the Governments laws on climate change. From Monday 15th April, the rebellion took to five iconic London Locations to cause chaos and to make a point over the limited attention climate change has gotten. People at the five locations camped, protested and even glued themselves to train carriages and the road. A group of people glued themselves to the fence outside Jeremy Corbyns home as part of the rebellion. It has now set the tone for future climate change protests to follow suit, with a pink boat outside oxford city circus with “TELL THE TRUTH” painted on the side of it and an inflated elephant with “ECOCIDE” written onto it. Celebrities like Emma Thompson flew into London to support the rebellion, standing with her fellow protesters on the little pink boat. Their demands were simple: UK must enact legally binding policies to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025, the government has to start “telling the truth” about the climate and form a citizens assembly to oversee the changes. As of Monday 22nd of April 1065, arrests have been made and 53 of them have been charged in relation to the protest. Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist spoke out in support of the rebellion on Sunday and said that nothing was being done despite of the words and promises made by the Government. However, the Extinction Rebellion protest has succeeded where other climate change protests have failed, as Labour has moved to call the environment and climate an emergency, delivering on one of three of Extinction rebellions demands. However, the real question is, have they gone too far or have they gone far enough? Let’s face it. The climate is changing due to our everyday thoughtless actions. In our opinion, the extinction rebellion is getting things done where other protests have failed to meet the mark and make the point. In fact, it is quite sad that we have gotten to a point where people have to glue themselves to train carriages to make their voices heard. Extreme personal actions should never have been taking for a world that we have damage, and it is up to us to stop climate change.
