Herts Young Homeless (hyh) is an independent charity founded in 1998. They offer free, wide-ranging support to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Hertfordshire. Hyh operates across prevention, crisis support and helping young people toward independent living. Their key services include the hyh hub, night stop, future roots and green packs initiative. The hyh hub This is the frontline of emergency support. It provides meditation, family conflict resolution and housing advice. In one year, they prevented homelessness for 360 young people, saving over £18 million in public spending. Nightstop This is a volunteer overnight refuge for 18-24 years old in crisis, funded by a £10,000 grant. It offers immediate shelter along with tailored guidance toward more permanent options. Future roots This is a transitional living project where young people love communally with a support worker to develop life skills, like budgeting and house sharing maintenance, which prepared them to move into independent tenancies. Green packs initiative This promotes sustainability, hyh distributes eco-friendly kits to its outreach support service funded by a local construction partner. Herts young homeless was named ‘best UK charity’ in 2022 which led to them earning funds and enhancing awareness. They also distributed £15,070 in 2025 through its ‘building brighter futures’ crowdfunding directly aiding young people in crisis. This also includes corporate and community fundraising. Partnerships-local businesses and civic leaders support hyh through sponsorships, grants and in-kind contributions-demonstrating the important role of community collaboration. Herts Young Homeless has become a fundament of youth homelessness prevention and support in Hertfordshire. By combine targeted early intervention, emergency and refuge services. They provide community engagement and help vulnerable young people survive immediate crises through equipping them with the confidence and skills to build independent, positive futures. How did Herts and Essex help? We completed a sleep-in, where our sixth-form students and some teachers built shelters and slept in the main hall to understand what individuals experience. This raised over £1300 for the charity and bought a lot of awareness to the subject of homelessness.
