Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick Book Review
Laura Romain
Two souls…Seven lifetimes... This is a book about the over-lapping, interconnected lives of two lovers who promise to find each other in each of their lives. Although a little confusing at first - as the only common thread is the names of the main characters - when you start learning about the characters, how things came to be and slowly uncover the hidden truths of Blessed Island, things start to make more sense. You’ll find yourself addicted because you want to learn more and you want to discover the truth.
We are first introduced to one of the main characters: Eric. He’s a journalist and has gone to Blessed Island to do research about an amazing flower. He’s a very inquisitive and likeable main character and his thought process is realistic, as most of the questions he asks himself are often questions you would like to be answered.
The other main character is Merle. She seems to be shrouded in mystery, not much is known about her, but, there is the nagging feeling that they have known each other all their lives. She is very intuitive and quick on her feet, she seems to have the answers to all of his questions but she doesn’t disclose them until she is certain of his true motives. When first introduced she doesn’t talk very much but gives the reader the distinct impression she knows more than she lets on.
And finally, the other main character to note is the village leader, Tor. Upon first reading this, he reminded me of Albus Dumbledore; kind and without malice to the untrained eye, but something sinister in the twinkle in his eye as he calmly manipulates the main character to trust his every word and steer him clear of the secrets he keeps. Alarm bells ring when the reader first meets Tor. Is he to be trusted?
Midwinterblood contains symbolism and motifs that run all the way through each story; this really carries the feeling of déjà vu throughout the novel. One of the motifs is the number seven. This is Eric’s surname and also the number of times Merle and Eric have promised to find each other. The number seven is very important in this book and its real significance will become more pronounced as the story progresses.
Overall, this is a carefully crafted, delicately written book; providing just enough information to keep the reader guessing… This story is a fantastic read and it will not disappoint you! So, if ever you are in need of something to read… Give this a go!
