It is coming to the end of the school year, meaning new experiences all round for everyone, it can be scary, but everyone experiences it at least one point in their life whether it is starting a new job, a new school year, going off to college or university. It is something new for everyone. I am in year 12 now, but I will be joining year 13 in September, which sounds daunting, as it is one-step closer to going off and starting a completely new life, with new people and new surroundings. I have grown to become comfortable with my daily life at Herts and Essex, I know all the people, the teachers, where all the classrooms are, all my friends and the thought of leaving this amazing environment brings a sense of nostalgia as I look back on my years at Herts and Essex. New experiences can be daunting, but they are essentially a part of what helps you to grow, emotionally and physically. I am starting to look for universities now, but this time next year, I would be on my long summer break, waiting to hear about what the next chapter in my life looks like and although I am scared, the thought of it does sound exciting. Finding out what University I am going too, meeting new friends, looking around campus, studying new topics, and coming closer to stepping out into the world, it is all a new experience and you are not alone. Many people will be feeling the same as you, scared to leave home, but excited to try something new, and although you do not know them right now, they might just end up being one of your closest friends. As well as this, another new experience some people might be getting ready for is joining high school, this can also be scary, but do not worry! I remember when I started at Herts and Essex, it feels like a thousand years ago when I walked into my form room in that brown uniform and sat down next to someone who I did not know. And I was scared, but so was she and we ended up talking together about how we did not know where we were going and what was happening and she ended up being my first friend in high school. Therefore, to the future year sevens although it looks like everyone knows everyone and has already made friends, there will be someone out there who may end up being a friend you keep until the very end of high school and into the rest of your life. September is always a stressful month, starting school, homework, classes, the weather starts to get a little colder, the days shorter. However, there are ways to cope, and here are some of these ways: - Going for a walk, even if it is just 10 minutes while you walk the dog, or even walk to school. That little bit of fresh air, can open you mind and release just some of that stress you are holding onto. - Taking part in a new hobby, a new hobby allows you to not have to think about school and focus on something else instead; it can be pottery, a sport, swimming, horse riding. For me I went to dance, which helped me to release my stress of the day and just focus on the moves instead. - Take a deep breath, it may seem simpler but every night before bed if you do 10 minutes of deep breaths in and out, it will help you to centre your mind and calm down, so that you can get a good night’s sleep, which is essential to your daily life - Talk to someone. A teacher, parent, sibling, friend, someone who you can trust, they may have gone through the same thing as you and will be able to offer you good advice. Even if you want to talk to your pet, that is fine! Therefore, even though the future is scary, you do not know what may happen, just like how you do not know what may happen tomorrow, or next week, do not hide from it. Take on those new chances, gain those memories, make the friends and live life on the edge, because you only live once, so make it count.
