What's the difference between men and women? Nothing
Arona Jones
There is one thing that men have that women don’t – cant’.
Wait, hear me out, I know that seems horribly misogynistic , especially coming from a young, white male such as myself. But there’s a genuine, evidenced point here, I swear. Anyway, here it is. Men have the capacity to think about nothing. The University professor that proposed what has come to be called the ‘Nothing Box Theory’ uses an analogy that I will now proceed to outline. To hear it from his (Yes, I’m afraid he is also a straight white male, although much more educated than I) original speech go to this link: |

So, the Nothing Box.
Men’s brains are like a series of boxes, each for a specific topic. These boxes never touch, and when a man talks about a specific topic the relevant box is retrieved, opened, and replaced when no longer needed. All the while, the focus is on that specific subject that was in the box. I personally can vouch for the striking accuracy of this analogy.
The brain of a woman, however, is said to be like a ball of wire. Everything is connected in a crazy, beautiful tangle that means every topic is intrinsically connected to everything else. Far from the boxes never touching, the set of subjects in a woman’s mind never separate. I can’t myself authoritatively comment on how accurate this is – I’d love to hear a female opinion on it though.
Within the multitude of boxes that make up a men’s brain is a special one. The Nothing Box.
In this box is nothing. When a man opens this box, he is quite literally thinking about nothing at all.
I can attest that an answer of ‘nothing’ to the question of ‘what are you thinking about?’ typically confuses or even irritates women. That is because, as studied by the University of Pennsylvania, women don’t have a ‘nothing box’. Because everything is all wired together in an interconnected ball, there’s no room for nothing.
A woman’s mind never stops going. A man, on the other hand, well his favourite place is the nothing box. Probably why men, and not women, love to go fishing. Sitting quietly for hours, doing almost nothing. Thinking of nothing.
