A Day in the Life of a Local Newspaper
Charlotte Crosby
On Thursday the 1st of October, I got to experience a day in the life of the Herts and Essex Observer.
The Herts and Essex Observer is a newspaper that is well-known to all of us living in the Hertfordshire and Essex area. Even if you only know it because you’ve seen it when trying to get on to the school’s website - or maybe your parents are avid readers - it is still a well respected newspaper that has been around for a long-time.
This was an amazing opportunity for me, as it is a career I am really interested in pursuing; all of the team at the Observer were very friendly and happy to answer any questions that I had. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and it really helped me gain an idea of what a career in journalism is really like. I also got to have a go at writing some articles of my own, which was pretty incredible.
While I was there, I learnt a lot; here are a quick six tips to writing a successful article.
Our online school newspaper The Network is fortunate enough to have a partnership with the Herts and Essex Observer. This means that not only do we get welcomed and helpful support from experienced and professional journalists, but also some of the articles written by our students at Herts and Essex may get the chance to be published on the Observer’s website too.
The Network’s team were even lucky enough to get a talk from Paul Winspear, editor of the Herts and Essex Observer, and he also helped us to narrow down the options for our name. In this after school session, Paul provided a lot of insight into the world of journalism for our newspaper team and gave us some helpful advice on how to make the most of this opportunity and make sure everyone can get involved with The Network.
The Network team are very grateful to have such a prestigious partnership with the Herts and Essex Observer who I cannot thank enough for such a brilliant day of work experience.

- Use a short and snappy first line – engages interest with the reader. Don’t ramble – only give necessary facts and opinions to keep your articles to the point and the right amount to read.
- Picture galleries are always good.
- It is always vital to keep up to date with the news and be aware and ready to report events or incidents that have happened.
- It’s good to have contacts with the public and those who have important well-known roles.
- You have the freedom to write what you like! (But only if you are an actual journalist).
