Compassion at Christmas: Record Breaking Food Bank Donations Amelia Erswell
In the term running up to Christmas, The Hertfordshire & Essex High School has been embracing the festive spirit of giving by participating in a Christmas Hamper competition on behalf of Broxbourne Food Bank.
This year students and staff from each form donated a total of 1305.95 kg of items. Not only did it exceed previous contributions, but also the space designated in the Foodbank! During 2016 the Foodbank issued 2500 food parcels and this year’s offering from Herts & Essex will make a huge difference to local individuals and families in crisis.
English teacher Mrs Keane, who co-ordinated the collection, summarised the event perfectly: "This year has seen an incredible act of generousness from Herts & Essex students. Not only foodstuffs have been collected, but also a vast quantity of toiletries, sanitary items, baby items, cleaning products and more. I am very proud to be part of such a caring, sharing community."
As Mrs Keane mentioned the Foodbank appreciated the thoughtful donations offered and specifically the more unconventional items such as blankets for comfort or cuddly toys for infants. The kindness of such gifts illustrates the school’s value of compassion and the magnanimity of students and teachers alike within the Herts & Essex community.
