Special Appeal: Give the Gift of Life This Christmas
Laila Page
It has recently come to The Network’s attention that there is a child in our community that really needs our help.
18 month year old Hazel Richardson (or Hazy as her parents, Patrick and Alice, call her) was diagnosed in October with an extremely rare cancer that shocked the family; this has left them in desperate need of a stem cell donation.
Hazel is currently being maintained with blood transfusions and oral chemo, but her only hope of a cure is if a donor match can be found.
Donating stem-cells is a quick and easy procedure very much like giving blood and can be used to save someone like Hazel. You only need to be 16-30 with good health to register and donate through the Anthony Nolan register.
The family live locally which makes donating even much more special, knowing that you could be saving someone’s life just down the street from you.
After finding out that no one in their family was a match, the Richardson’s are calling out for as many people as possible to get on the donation register in the hope that someone out there could help save their daughter's life.
There is a growing problem with donors in the UK. In 2014, it was said that 6,856 people were on the list to receive an organ or stem cells but are simply not enough of us who are willing to put ourselves on this life saving register.
This is why we are calling on you, the students, to get on the register. If you are 16 or over maybe you could be the miracle match that could save Hazel’s life. Tell your friends and family about this and lets get as many people on the register as possible.
