Top Skincare Tips
by Evie Brewer
It is important to understand what does and doesn’t work for your skin. There are so many products available, however, what works for your friends, or your favourite influencer may cause problems for you. It may take lots of trying different products to find the right ones, so here are some of my top skincare tips to make that process just a little bit easier!
Sometimes simple is better:
If you don’t already have a skincare routine, or if your current one isn’t working for you, I would recommend starting with the basics. For me, this was a cleanser, toner and serum. However, a cleanser and a moisturiser are an even better starting point for a morning and night routine. It is important that the cleanser you are using is gentle and non-irritating, and the moisturiser you use works for your skin type.
Skin types:
I found that some of the product I use now made my skin worse before it got better. Consistency is key with your skincare as it won’t work overnight! I would recommend trying a product for 2-3 months, but it might take as long as 6 months to start seeing results.
Double cleansing:
If you often wear makeup during the day, double cleansing at is a good way of making sure that you are getting all of the makeup off of your face. This will help to prevent breakouts as it removes everything that has built up on our face throughout the day. Start with an oil based cleanser to remove all of the dirt, pollution and spf from off your face. Make sure you are including your neck when you cleanse and moisturise as its one of the first places to age. A water based cleanser is ideal for your second cleanse as it removes the last traces of dirt and grime.
Toning:
It is important not to use anything too harsh on your skin, you need to look for something that is going to hydrate and restore your skins surface and moisture barrier. Look out for niacinamide (vitamin B3) as a hero ingredient.
Moisturising:
If your skin is oily or combination, then lightweight balancing moisturisers are good. Products containing prebiotics will help fight off blemish causing bacteria. If you have a sensitive or drier skin type, then start with products that are unscented.
Use sunscreen:
Using sunscreen is very important for your skin all year round, not just in the summer. Protecting yourself against sun damage is very important so I would recommend using a spf after you moisturise in the mornings.
Exfoliating:
I recommend exfoliating once a week with either a gentle scrub, to get rid of dead skin cells, or a fruit enzyme exfoliator which is like a little Pac-man that eats all of the dead skin. This will help brighten your complexion and make your other products work more effectively.
Masks:
Masks can be used weekly as a way of absorbing excess oil (for this look out for masks containing salicylic acid) or as a way of rehydrating your skin.
