Textiles/ Art “Big Sister” Advice

Giving advice on doing art and textiles
Art and textiles at GCSE/ A level are expressive and exciting and a great way to communicate your artistry and ideation. Although, as creative students, we understand it can be challenging to find inspiration and keep on top of deadlines. As someone who has taken GCSE art and A level textiles, I know how daunting it can be when you feel stuck or are just starting out. For this reason, I have collated a list of tips I have learnt along the way that I hope some of you can find comforting and helpful.
Where to find inspiration…
  • Go out – it’s important to find inspiration not entirely online. Take photos when you go on day trips/ holidays. Research into unique places you could go to. For example, I visited the Roca London gallery for my project, somewhere not many people know about.
  • Pinterest mood boards are your best friend. Make sections for different styles that you are fascinated by. Include photos from runways, films, other people’s work, colours, graphic designs.
  • Research work from different cultures or eras that you could use elements of.
  • Create things from what you love – a book, a person, an album, your hometown.

How to stay on top of your work…
  • Buy a planner that is dedicated to art/ textiles work. Write down all your deadlines (even small, personal deadlines) that you can prioritise and make a routine for.
  • Give yourself an aim for each week.
  • Stick post it notes on unfinished pages of what you need to complete (e.g., more responses or analysis) so you have the satisfaction of taking them off.
  • Complete assignments like written studies or evaluations as soon as they are set – this gets it out of the way so you can focus on book work.
