A THIRTEENTH STAR SIGN?
Ashleigh Leung
So, do you believe in star signs? If you do, you should recognise: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. These are the star signs that most astrologers currently use. However, in 2007, a 13th sign was discovered: Ophiuchus. This constellation is currently depicted as a god handling a snake and is actually the only sign that is represented by a human. Another name for this is 'Serpentarius.'
According to ‘Siderealist.com’, Ptolemy (AD 90 – AD 168), an astronomer from Alexandria, removed Ophiuchus from the Zodiac template in order to strengthen patriarchy. Originally, Serpentarius was depicted as a naked woman holding two snakes. The sign holds more stereotypically feminine traits associated with medicine and wisdom. In 2007, it re-emerged as an old male handling a snake and had recently been more recognised in 2011.
Mythological Origins
Ophiuchus is the only sign associated with a real person, Imhotep. If you're watched 'The Mummy' films, Imhotep is the mummy in the first film and in case you haven't watched it, he is an Egyptian emperor. As well as this, Ophiuchus (or in this case, Asclepios) is the illegitimate son of Apolo who later became a surgeon on the ship, Argus, treating people back to life. He even treated the son of King Minos of Crete. However, she tried to revive Orion, who was pricked by a Scorpion, leading to Pluto complaining to Zeus, suggesting Asclepios of possibly reviving all of the town of Hades and, eventually, he sent Rallos to kill Asclepios and gave him a place near the serpent in the sky to represent renewed life.
With the Ophiuchus sign, this is the true reflection of the alignment of the Earth and stars:
Capricorn: Jan. 20 – Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 – March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18- May 13
Taurus: May 13- June 21
Gemini: June 21- July 20
Cancer: July 20- Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10- Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16- Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30- Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23- Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29- Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17- Jan. 24
So, who's born under the 13th sign, the Ophiuchus? Who's in denial that they're not born under Sagittarius? Just a few hours ago, I was too. I'm also born under the Ophiuchus.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed to find out because crabs, bulls, scales, water and other everyday things represent every other signs, but Sagittarius was a centaur. Sagittarius was an exciting mythical creature unlike other signs that are represented by everyday items and animals. However, I did become more proud of my true sign after looking at several websites to find out more about Ophiuchus and here's what I've found about the base of our personalities.
Personality
