Let’s be honest, we all end up piling on the pounds over the summer a juicy burger and fries being too delicious to resist. At this time of crisis, I am here to inform you of 5 top tips for getting back into shape after the summer.

Think about your motive. Do you do sport to de-stress after a hard day of school or do you do you do it to stay in shape? Personally, sport improves my mental health and staying in shape is just a bonus. By thinking about your motives first you can proactively create your goals for the short term and long term. For example, if your goal is to improve your long distance running you can create your long term goal as being able to reach 10km in a certain amount of time.

Try to acknowledge your faults. This is hard for us to admit but there’s no denying it we all have them. Your faults may be that you binge eat too many biscuits or that you make excuses to get out of going to the gym; by acknowledging these flaws you can cut them out and learn from them to change your lifestyle for the better. Why not try to create a ‘New Month Sport Resolution’?

Make it part of your daily routine. Just take a break from all your stresses and take a minute to yourself by: going for a walk, swim or doing some yoga. In the moment, this may fill you with dread but, trust me, by writing it down and actually doing it your energy and glow will increase and the feeling that you get will provide the future incentive. Your mental health is more likely to improve by getting your endorphins pumping.

Ditch the all-or-nothing attitude. You don’t have to fully exert yourself for exercise to be beneficial. ‘No pain no gain’ is a myth! You can still gain the mental and physical benefits of exercise without feeling like you are dying a slow death. A little exercise each day is truly the best way.

Make it fun! Fun workouts will motivate you to exercise more often and ensuring that you choose to participate in sports that you love is essential. This ‘fun’ can be defined by you; it could consist of the reward you get afterwards (a chocolate treat) or it could be how you decide to exercise for example doing it with friends. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring or a chore and you are more likely to stick to your commitments if you are having fun. Final tip therefore is change your perception of the act of exercise and the reality will change too.
