Innocent or Guilty? I stopped. There it was again. I willed myself to be as quiet as possible as I crept down the creaking stairs. All of a sudden I heard a deafening scream. No, it was more like a screeching sound; it was like a million sharp nails scraping down a wooden door. The sound caught my breath and made my throat as dry as a desert. I peered down at my hand, it was shaking like mad, too much, I needed it too be still if I was going to kill this thing.
“Finally, we meet again.”
The voice of the killer chilled me to the bone. I tried to turn around bur something didn’t, or wouldn’t, let me.
“It’s been so long, too long, since I’ve seen you, my dear friend.” He whispered, his breath warm on my neck.
“No, you’re not here, you’re not real, you’re…you’re…” I stammered.
“Dead? Oh my dear I am very much alive and here. Don’t try pretend im not, you’ve already done that, and see what happened there. Don’t you remember? Front page on every newspaper ‘Boy aged 14 fell of a bridge and died. His best friend, Lily witnessed the whole thing and told us that he had slipped’. But that didn’t happen, did it? No, what really should have been on that newspaper is ‘Boy aged 14 got pushed of a bridge by his best friend and died’. You ruined everything I had! You took away my family, friends and life. I now I’m here to take away yours. I’ve already killed your friends, even your precious little Betsy, I’ve killed you’re mum and dad and sister. And now I’m going to kill you.”
“No, no, that never happened. You… you… jumped. I was the one who tried to stop you. I told you to stop messing around, to stop dancing on the very top of the bridge, but you didn’t listen, no, you just laughed and carried on. And then you…you sli…you slipped.” The words tumbled out her mouth before she could stop them.
“Liar! All of it is lies! LIES!” He shouted, so hard that you could see the veins throbbing on his cut face. The killer lunged at my face, his sward glinting in the gloomy room. My automatic reaction was to charge at him, my fists clenched, my mouth screaming in rage. We tumbled around on the floor, kicking, shouting and punching. Suddenly, I found myself shoved against a wall, the killers sward placed on my neck.
“Revenge is mine.” He hissed, a wide grin covering his face.
“No…”I gasped, running out of breath “no, it never will be”
Then, without a warning, I twisted around, grabbing his sword and plunging it in his arm. In shock he tumbled backwards, he then screamed “This is not the end!” With a flick of his coat, he disappeared, leaving me sobbing, lent against the door. I knew he was right, this wasn’t the end, no, it was just the beginning…
