Zoella is a vlogger and Youtube sensation with over 10 million subscribers. She is Mind’s first Digital Ambassador and regularly vlogs about fashion, beauty and her everyday life.
Zoella first experienced panic attacks and anxiety when she was 14-years-old. From the outside looking in, her life is practically perfect in every way. But in reality, vlogger Zoella suffers from crippling anxiety that at times can leave her struggling to leave the house. She describes symptoms of her heart racing, the feeling of claustrophobia, nausea and shortness of breath. But despite suffering from this mental illness she has found techniques to overcome her issues including getting enough sleep, looking forward, gentle exercise and listening to relaxing music. She says “anxiety isn't something that people get rid of; it's something that you learn to manage and control.”
Zoe has been receiving professional help for her issues since the age of 17, but she admits it’s not always been easy finding a GP that understands how she feels. She says ‘you can feel a huge sense of defeat when you leave a doctor's surgery feeling like the world doesn't understand.’ She also describes another difficult aspect when people who don't understand, don't try to understand or have no empathy and describes it as “isolating and disheartening." However, Zoella is an active ambassador for mind hoping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and hopes in the future the stigma around mental health will be removed. Zoella is a perfect example to show that anyone can suffer from mental health even celebrities.
